Method: All Grain

I based this recipe on the Surly Bender Brown Ale kit at Northern Brewer. Instead of using malted oats, I'm using flaked oats (couldn't find malted oats locally.) I'm also using an American ale yeast (WLP001) instead of Dry English Ale yeast. I plan to enter this in the All Idaho Hausbrau battle in june as an American Brown Ale, and didn't want English yeast character.

Comments

I upped my water/grain ratio from 1.25qt/lb to 1.33qt/lb and got a big jump in efficiency. 85% mash efficiency. This caused me to overshoot my OG a bit. It came in at 1.063 and I had planned for 1.060 (max for the style). 

After 16 days in the primary, I think I under-pitched. Granted I mashed at 153F, it finished at 1.018. I was hoping for closer to 1.015. Warm and flat, it seems quite well balanced, but I fear there will be a residual sweetness that is out of character for an American Brown. We shall see. It does seem very well balanced right now.
